Blood On Demand

Pioneering Biomanufacturing Technologies

Sciperio merges biology, chemistry, electrical and mechanical engineering, photonics, sensors, microfluidics, and machine learning in their BioFacture product line to create groundbreaking tools for the biological sciences.

BioFacture Voxelized Bioreactor

The Sciperio BioFacture team has developed a highly sensorized, voxelized, and modularly expandable volume bioreactor, specifically engineered for efficient and high-capacity cell production. This bioreactor was initially designed to support the On-Demand Blood Program, aimed at manufacturing transfusable blood products on demand, but that was only a start. Beyond blood production, our bioreactor is adaptable for a wide range of cellular therapy production applications. Whether it’s basic research or scaling up to initial process development, the BioFacture bioreactor is equipped to handle the task.

The BioFacture bioreactor offers real-time data and machine learning-driven optimization. The bioreactor’s voxel-based sensor system collects real-time data on vital parameters such as nutrient levels and environmental conditions. Machine learning algorithms process this data to continuously optimize media exchange and flow dynamics, ensuring optimal cell growth and production efficiency. Among other milestones, the bioreactor has proven successful in growing and differentiating neutrophils from umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells, as well as a demonstrated expansion of adult peripheral T cells and natural killer cells, marking significant strides in cellular therapy development.

BioFacture Culture Media Recycling System

Sciperio’s BioFacture team has pioneered a novel method to remove inhibitory metabolic waste from culture medium in situ using an easily adaptable in-line media recycling system. With this system, cellular waste products such as ammonia and lactate are selectively removed from the culture media, and the media is reconditioned to optimal conditions, promoting healthier cell cultures, drastically reducing materials cost, and mitigating the environmental footprint of the biomanufacturing process.

This innovation in media handling technology allows us to culture differentiating red blood cells at high densities while minimizing the continuous need for fresh culture media and regular media exchanges with no corresponding drop in product quality. We are currently working to apply this technology to a broader range of cellular therapies, and are eager to partner with new research groups to develop this technology further.
